Landfill mining

Landfill mining

Landfill mining is the business of processing waste on landfill sites for the materials thrown away.  These materials may include metals and plastics in consumer goods.  Similar to recycling.  Potentially a feeder industry to pure recycling in a compositional free market.

Features:

Features might include

  • Landfill site location, identification and recording
  • Landfill content isolation from environment - e.g. addressing saline leeching
  • Degassing
  • Landfill content separation and identifiction

Risks:

Landfills can be a repository of cultural materials in a consumable form.  As such early reclamation of material and unconsidered pulping might lead to cultural data loss.  Such a loss might be most noticed if an informational singularity were to be encountered.
